So far 2009 has been a bit of a tough year, but each day the sun is shining a bit brighter and a little longer. It's irresistible to consider that summer is just around the corner! Your foodie friends may cringe at the thought, but cash-strapped grad students and single urbanites have had it right all along: As a general rule, microwaves are more eco-friendly than conventional ovens. However, that doesn't mean you should consign yourself to a life of gummy casseroles and dry chicken just to save the planet.

First off, a little perspective. According to the Department of Energy, cooking accounts for a little less than 3 percent of an average home's energy use (PDF). So any changes you make aren't going to add up to much—you'll have a much bigger impact by looking to your light fixtures or your thermostat. On the other hand, it is fairly easy to cut energy consumption in the kitchen, so why wouldn't you?

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase "green building?" Sleek new structures with skins of advanced glass and recycled steel that blend into the landscape, facades and roofs draped in a combination of daylight-harvesting windows, wildlife habitat, and photovoltaics? New construction affords the flexibility to build contemporary masterpieces, like the California Academy of Sciences, which will receive its LEED Platinum certification this morning in San Francisco. The museum will be the largest and most visited LEED Platinum building in the world.

The Academy of Sciences is a breathtaking example of our city and our citizens' efforts to address the fact that roughly half of all greenhouse gas emissions in San Francisco are attributable to our buildings. In August of 2008, I signed a groundbreaking green building ordinance that created the most stringent green building requirements in the nation. This was a big step in the right direction, requiring that all new buildings be subject to an unprecedented level of LEED and green building certifications. However, a comprehensive recipe for our environmental and economic sustainability requires solutions to the challenges posed by existing buildings.

The answer may be planted right in front of you. First lady Michelle Obama helped break ground on a new White House organic "kitchen garden" Friday. It will be the first working garden at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a so-called "victory garden" at the height of World War II. This time, however, the enemy is obesity. The first family is hoping to send a clear message to a fast food-driven nation that often seems to be losing the battle of the bulge. "We're just hoping that a lot of families look at us and say this is something that they can do and talk to their own kids about and think a little bit critically about the food choices that they make," said Marian Robinson, the president's mother-in-law.
